Energy Vault Expands Operations in China with Major Milestones

In December 2023, Energy Vault achieved a significant milestone with the successful full interconnection of the Rudong 25 MW/100 MWh EVx system to the local state utility grid. This milestone enabled the full commissioning of the system, facilitating inverse power operation and operational activity powered by the State Grid.

Additionally, progress continues with the construction of a second EVx system in Zhangye City, Gansu Province. This system, which began in Q2 2023, has completed foundation work and initial construction up to the fourth floor above ground.

Both the Rudong and Zhangye EVx Gravity Storage Systems have been officially designated as “new energy storage pilot demonstration projects” by China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) in their recent announcements, highlighting their importance in advancing energy storage capabilities in China.

With the addition of the Rudong EVx system, a total of 468 MWh out of the announced 3.7 GWh of Energy Vault’s EVx gravity energy storage systems (GESS) are currently under construction in China, reflecting the country’s status as the world’s largest and fastest-growing energy storage market.

Construction has also commenced on three additional EVx GESS deployments in China:

  • A 17 MW/68 MWh EVx located in Zhangye City, Gansu Province.
  • A 50 MW/200 MWh EVx located in Ziuquan City, Jinta County, Gansu Province.
  • A 25 MW/100 MWh EVx located in Huailai Cunrui Town, Zhangjiakou County, Hebei Province.

These deployments represent a total of nine EVx GESS projects currently underway in China, totaling 3.7 GWh. Each deployment will generate future project revenue royalties for Energy Vault as they are built and commissioned.

Robert Piconi, Chairman and CEO of Energy Vault, expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating, “We look forward to sharing additional performance and project development in the coming weeks and months as commissioning and new project activities continue at a rapid pace.”

Energy Vault’s gravity energy storage technology is playing a crucial role in supporting China’s energy transition efforts, aligning with the country’s goal to integrate renewable energy sources and enhance grid reliability.
