What is a Lunar Eclipse or Blood Moon?

A total lunar eclipse is sometimes called a Blood Moon, because of the reddish tinge the Full Moon takes on when fully eclipsed. The term is also frequently used to describe four total lunar eclipses that occur in a row.

A total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon travels through the Earth’s umbra and blocks all direct sunlight from illuminating the Moon’s surface. However, some sunlight still reaches the lunar surface indirectly, via the Earth’s atmosphere, bathing the Moon in a reddish, yellow, or orange glow.

As the Sun’s rays pass through the atmosphere, some colors in the light spectrum—those towards the violet spectrum—are filtered out by a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. This is the same mechanism that causes colorful sunrises and sunsets. Red wavelengths are least affected by this effect, so the light reaching the Moon’s surface has a reddish hue, causing the fully eclipsed Moon to take on a red color.

How Do Lunar Eclipses Impact the World?

Eclipses are known to impact geology, wildlife, and human health.  Read on about it.

Lunar Eclipse effects on Tides:

A lunar eclipse occurs only on full moon nights. It generally lasts for a period of three hours. Hence, the tides during this time are higher.

Accelerate moods, emotions, and psychic abilities:

Tidal moon waves are known to make people more emotional, and some can even become more hysterical and cry more easily.  It is said the waves from the moon strengthen psychic abilities which is why a lot of spiritual activities take place during the time of the full moon.

Eclipses have often been regarded as signs or evil omens by ancient tribes. It has also led them to sacrifice animals and fellow humans to appease the gods.

Affect health:

A high risk of skin disease: According to Indian astrology, the human body goes through some changes during a lunar eclipse. According to Hindu philosophy, “Kalpa dosha” may undergo an imbalance. It is generally known for controlling muscle growth, immune function, and stability. Hence, this might increase the risk of skin disease and other ailments.

An eclipse can affect the eyes: Often times during an eclipse, people are advised to wear protective eyewear. However, this applies more to solar eclipses than lunar eclipses. The lunar eclipse has been scientifically proven to be harmless to the human eye.

Regulate hormones:

There are speculations that suggest a possible connection between the moon and a woman’s menstrual cycle. The female menstrual cycle is usually 28 days long while the moon’s cycle is 29.5 days. It is believed by many that the gravitational pull can help regulate one’s cycle.

Lunar Eclipse effects on Wildlife:

While now said to be a myth, centuries-old stories claim that wildlife behaves differently during a penumbral lunar eclipse. But, in 2010, a study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania Department of Anthropology revealed that an owl and monkey showed a heightened change in their activity during a lunar eclipse.  It is very common to see dogs on the road howling at the full moon at night

Blood moon prophecy

The Blood Moon prophecies were a series of prophecies by Christian preachers John Hagee and Mark Biltz, connected to a series of four full moons in 2014 and 2015. The omens stated that a tetrad (a series of four consecutive lunar eclipses—all total and coinciding on Jewish holidays—with six full moons in between, and no intervening partial lunar eclipses) which began with the April 2014 lunar eclipse was the beginning of the end times as described in the Bible in the Book of Joel, Acts 2:20, and Revelation 6:12. The tetrad ended with the lunar eclipse on September 27–28, 2015.
