The Bharatiya Janata Party names Tirath Singh Rawat as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand after the resignation of Trivendra Singh Rawat on Tuesday. Rawat’s swearing-in will be at 4 p.m. today.
Tirath Singh Rawat is a BJP MP and was the party chief in Uttarakhand in 2013-15. Earlier, he was also an MLA from Uttarakhand.
Tirath Singh Rawat was the first education minister of the newly formed state of Uttarakhand. Later, he was elected as state general secretary of Uttarakhand in 2007, and then state chief electoral officer and state membership chief. In 2012, he was elected as legislative assembly member (MLA) and in 2013, he became Uttarakhand’s BJP Chief.
This appointment transpires a day after Trivendra Rawat resigned as the chief minister following unrest in the BJP about the manner in which the previous chief minister was functioning. When asked why he resigned, Trivendra Singh Rawat replied, “Yeh samuhik nirnay hota hai aur iska bahut acchha jawab aapko Delhi jaana padega uske liye (A collective decision is made. And for an appropriate answer, you will have to go to Delhi).”
It has been quite a while that members of the BJP have been aware of the turbulence in the party over Rawat’s leadership. After the visit of BJP vice president Raman Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Dushyant Gautam to Uttarakhand on March 7, where they met MLAs, RSS leaders, and the Chief Minister, his sudden resignation transpired.
All eyes are on Uttarakhand where the Legislative Assembly elections will be held in Uttarakhand in February 2022 to elect 70 members of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly.
