Protests on Rahul Gandhi’s Denial to Campus and Arrests

Congress has accused the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS)-led state government of forcing the institution to stop Gandhi’s visit. Some students moved the Telangana High Court, urging it to direct the university to allow Gandhi’s visit, while some protested outside the campus.

While talking to the media, a National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) member said, “It has been decided that Rahul Gandhi will address the students here at the Osmania University on May 7. So we (NSUI) have come here to give a representation to the Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University but he is not giving us permission (to hold Rahul Gandhi’s visit) as he has been ordered to do so by the government of Telangana.”

The police have incarcerated the protesting NSUI members and a case has been registered for obstructing the public servant in conducting their duty.

Osmania University VC Professor Ravinder Yadav issued a clarification

Osmania University VC Professor Ravinder Yadav issued a clarification on denying Rahul Gandhi the campus visit.

He said the university has passed a resolution in the executive council in June 2021 stating that no political activity should be allowed on university premises because it leads to academic disturbance and the varsity hasn’t allowed any political party to conduct any meeting.

“Subsequently NGOS polls and PG exams are scheduled on May 7, how can we allow Rahul Gandhi? Congress leaders without taking our consent or permission or giving us a complete version, have ransacked our admin building. Congress leaders also pelted stones and threatened our University staff and police,” he added.

“If this happens how can we protect the campus. Is this the Congress culture? We will file a counter in the High Court. Congress or Rahul Gandhi can have interaction somewhere in the city, why are they so particular to enter into the university?” asked Professor Yadav.

Congress Hits Back

Congress reacted by also giving a statement to hit back at the allegations leveled by the university VC.

Congress’ V Hanumantha Rao asked, “Why should there be a problem if he is interacting with students. He has been doing it in other states also. Students are the future. TRS government should not block or play politics over this.”

Rao went on to add, “Telangana was given by Rahul’s mother! Sonia Gandhi was also aware this move would remove Congress from Andhra Pradesh. KCR and KTR have even thanked Sonia Gandhi for it. There is no agenda for such meetings, it is a generic interaction with students.”
