Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said today that Congress will reserve 40 percent of its tickets for women in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections.

The party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also said in her press conference in Lucknow, “Women can bring about change and they need to step forward,” and added, “This decision is for the girls of Uttar Pradesh…This decision is for women who want change.”

She made this decision, she says when on visiting Allahabad University one time, girls approached her sharing that the laws in the university favored boys more than girls.  She expressed that women’s involvement in politics would strengthen laws to help women in view of gender inequality.

She also said, “The candidate’s competence will determine the ticket,”  meaning it is also diligence and hard work that would merit the ticket.

Traditionally, in Uttar Pradesh, caste politics has played a major role in elections in Uttar Pradesh with the BJP seen as trying to placate the Brahmins and earlier, Mayawati was trying to placate the Dalits

Presently, the mistreatment of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri is stirring up a “farmers wave” in India with the general population feeling indignant at the cruelty implemented on farmers and Ajay Mishra, whose son has been arrested in the case involving running over of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri, is still continuing as the junior minister for home at the Centre with farmers, opposition and public demanding that he step down.

Congress has repeatedly called for the minister’s resignation, has stood with the farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri, and marched to venues where rape victims were murdered to stand with the family, all moves which the Yogi government tried to unsuccessfully thwart.

Also, Congress is pouring the spotlight on the gender issue in a state where multiple brutal rapes and murders have been committed against women which have been reported more openly in the last few years due to the gory nature of the crimes. Some of these cases — including the gang rape of a Dalit woman in Hathras, and the case in Unnao — made headlines and evoked outrage across the country.

Targetting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Ms Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said those who “speak up” in the state are crushed including journalists who are incarcerated or threatened for exposing the Uttar Pradesh government
