Srinagar: Despite the 84-hour COVID-19 lockdown imposed by the authorities from Thursday evening, the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only all-weather road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for traffic.

The Union Territory (UT) administration has imposed corona lockdown from 1900 hrs on Thursday and to 0700 hrs on Monday in Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla, Badgam, Kulgam, Pulwama, and Ganderbal in the Kashmir valley.

One-way traffic still continued on the highway, the only road linking the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir.

However, the historic 86-km-long Mughal road, seen as an alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained closed though the snow clearance operation has been completed.

Only one-way fresh Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) traffic will ply from Jammu to Srinagar on Friday. However, Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) stranded Nashree and Ramban will also ply towards Srinagar, a traffic police official told UNI.

He said the Security forces were advised not to ply against the traffic advisory issued by the traffic department in view of traffic congestion on the highway, he said adding they may ply from Jammu towards Srinagar.

The Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in the Jammu region remained closed though the snow has been cleared.

A spokesman said the Srinagar-Leh highway was also through. However, only vehicles carrying essentials were being allowed to ply from Srinagar towards UT Ladakh.

Vehicles can ply from 0700 hrs till 1400 hrs, he said adding no vehicle will be allowed from the opposite direction.
