Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, 88, has tested positive for COVID-19 and been admitted to the Trauma Centre of Delhi’s AIIMS, according to news agency ANI. After he had a fever, a COVID-19 test was done on him revealing he was positive and was admitted at around 5 pm.

Dr. Singh has received his two vaccine doses (of Covaxin) – the first on March 4 and the second on April 3. Sources said he was shifted to hospital as “a matter of precaution”.

AIIMS is expected to release a more detailed statement soon.

Chief Minister of Bengal, Mamata Banerjee wished him a speedy recovery.

Famous cartoonist Satish Acharya and renowned journalist Rajdeep Sardesai wished him a speedy recovery.

Former Union Minister P Chidambaram, who was a member of Dr Singh’s cabinet, also tweeted.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadhra wished him a speedy recovery.

As SARS-CoV-2 is surging up wildly in India taking over Brazil and seemingly will top the worldometer charts, there is grave concern that the pandemic will soon become an unretractable disaster.

On Saturday, Dr. Singh had participated in a meeting with senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on the coronavirus situation in the country discussing these problems.

Out of concern, Dr. Manmohan Singh penned a 5-point solution letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with suggestions of how to better manage the stalking pandemic in its second wave of fury that has infected over 1.5 crore Indians and killed nearly 1.8 lakh.

He urged Prime Minister Modi to allow state governments to define categories of frontline workers that need to be vaccinated against Covid on priority “even if they are below 45 years of age”.

Dr Singh also urged the centre to place “enough” vaccine orders in advance, and that the distribution of jabs among states should be based on a “transparent formula”.

A shortage of Covid vaccines – India has two – Covaxin and Covishield – with doses Russia’s Sputnik V expected soon as well – has made headlines, setting up a back-and-forth between the centre and states that say they have shut down some vaccination centres due to a lack of doses.

In his letter Dr. Singh stressed on ramping up the vaccination drive to defeat the virus and said the centre had to proactively support vaccine producers in expanding manufacturing facilities.

This morning over 2.7 lakh were reported from the preceding 24 hours – the fifth straight day with over two lakh new cases – and over one lakh per day every day since April 7.

Dr. Singh’s advice is timely at a time when it is said that one out of every 5 Indians has COVID-19, and how we manage is the only solution.  Certainly, the massive crowds seen in recent election rallies and mass religious gatherings could have also inflammed the pandemic.

On Sunday, he  tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to the AIIMS, according to news agency ANI.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was a brilliant economist during his tenure whose schemes lifted 271 millions out of poverty, and financial insight brought India through the financial global crash where India was not as affected as other nations, he is a great intelligent visionary who envisaged an extraordinary era in India.

We all wish him a speedy recovery!
