COVID cases in India are the highest surge up to an unprecedented 93,249, which is the highest daily rise (in September 19 recorded cases at 93,337 cases). The Health Ministry also reported 513 COVID-related deaths in the last 24 hours, which is 28 percent lower than the 714 deaths reported yesterday.
It is alarming that the cases are rising in spite of 65 million vaccine doses administered so far. The recovery rate dropped down to 93.14 percent per recent data.
Per the Health Ministry, 8 states account for 81.42 percent of the infections reported in the last 24 hours, Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab. Maharashtra the most densely populated state in India tops the list with 60 percent of cases coming from a massive nine-fold jump in the last two months with 49,447 coronavirus cases and 277 deaths on Saturday. India records over 1.24 crore infections with the third-highest number of cases in the world after the United States and Brazil.
In order to prioritize vaccines for frontline medical and healthcare workers, the government has removed them from the hurdles of registering for the vaccine. This is to ensure vaccine coverage reaches all categories of people faster and ensure the healthcare workers get first priority and are well protected during their fight about the pandemic.
While the frightening surge in COVID cases in India, caused state governments to reinforce virus-fighting measures, including the closure of educational institutions and restrictions on gatherings for marriages and other family functions, unfortunately, the central and state governments themselves are in a heavy campaign mode!
People taking things lightly have stopped following formal corona guidelines. They have thrown precautions to the winds and abandoned wearing masks, stopped sanitizing hands, and huddled together in enormous crowds. In these elections, the leaders of the nation are leading the fray evoking massive rallies with explosive crowds in order to garner votes. By doing this, they are further strengthening the virus to find human hosts on the multitudes to thrive stronger, empowering stronger new variants of the corona strains to multiply.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a statement saying:
“We are still learning how well vaccines prevent you from spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 to others, even if you do not have symptoms.
We are also still learning how long COVID-19 vaccines protect people.
We are still learning how many people have to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before most people can be considered protected (population immunity).
We are still learning how effective the vaccines are against new variants of the virus that causes COVID-19.”
So it is evident that no one knows much about the virus yet, how it works and mutates, nor how to completely defeat it.
The crux of it all is, the corona crisis is not over, and new strains are developing which could make the present vaccines ineffective. In the past, following the norms brought results bringing the virus under control. Basically, the coronavirus needs a host, and that can only be found in crowds. If the virus does not get a host in time, it dies off. Unfortunately, by not distancing and maintaining hygiene, and not masking, people are allowing the vaccine to get stronger and multiply and this is why the cases are rising rapidly.
However, what is more worrying is the central government talking with a double-forked tongue telling the state governments to take action as they deem fit and telling crowds to mask and distance yet they are still holding gigantic rallies where none of the populous masses are wearing mask nor distancing. The Prime Minister is heavily criticized for calling millions on streets in herds during his campaigns, while double talks about masking and distancing, and the sheer hypocrisy of it all is hitting most people.
This is what is probably raking up the virus to new virulent variants, but does the government really care?
