Yangon: Western diplomats in Myanmar called on the military “to refrain from violence against protestors”, harass and arrest politicians, social workers, and journalists, and warned that the whole world was watching the incidents.
“We appeal to the security forces to refrain from violence against protesters and civilians,” a statement issued by the Western embassies said. We condemn violence against political leaders, civil society activists, and social workers, as well as journalists.
The statement is signed by a delegation of ambassadors from the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, the European Union, and EU member states including Denmark, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
It is noteworthy that after the coup in Myanmar, people have taken to the streets demanding restoration of democracy. Army vehicles are patrolling the cities and the army is repeatedly firing at protesters.
