More than 800 children were in school at the time of attack. 406 children have returned to safe houses while other missing children are yet to be traced.

Abuja: Unidentified gunmen attacked a school in the northern Nigerian state of Katsina and kidnapped around 400 children. The Vanguard newspaper of Nigeria reported about it quoting the officials.

The incident occurred on Friday when some armed men attacked Kankara Government Secondary School. After killing the school’s security personnel, they barged into the school premises.

More than 800 children were in school at the time of the attack. No clear information has been available about the number of children kidnapped by the gunmen. A large number of school children hid in the surrounding area during the attack.

Education Commissioner Badamasi Lawal Charanchi said that 406 children have returned safely while the other missing children are yet to be traced.

According to the officials, the children remained hidden in the bushes all night and returned to their homes in the morning. The Nigerian Police, Army, and Air Force are also working with the school administration to locate the missing children.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attack and appealed to take strict action against those responsible.
