HealthDelhi High Court lashes out at Kejriwal government on growing number of Covid cases

Delhi High Court said why the Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party government awaited 18 days to limit the number of people attending wedding celebrations.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday expressed serious concern over the uncontrolled state of the Coronavirus epidemic in the capital Delhi and lashed out at the Kejriwal government. The court said as to why the Aam Aadmi Party government led by Arvind Kejriwal awaited 18 days to limit the number of people attending weddings.

The court also asked if the government is aware of the fact that there is no place in the cemeteries, the corpses are being burnt even in the evening and at night. A person named Rakesh Malhotra has filed a PIL in the court, seeking to increase the number of Covid tests in the national capital and to get quick results.

After hearing the petition, the bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Subramaniam Prasad said, ‘You (Delhi government) were asleep and had to wake you up from. When we shove you then you start playing turtle.’

Why should we wake you (the Delhi government) up from deep sleep on 11 November? What did you do between 1 November and 11 November? Why did you wait 18 days (until November 18) to take any decision? Do you also know how many people died during this period? Can I answer the relatives of the deceased or explain anything to them?’

The court also said that the information that the Aam Aadmi Party government of Delhi shared in the court on the growing Covid cases is completely different from what’s shared by the ministers in the press briefings. This means that one death is occurring every 10 minutes or five deaths per hour due to the epidemic in Delhi.

The Delhi High Court said that the penalty imposed on not wearing masks and maintaining physical distance also did not prove effective. The court’s comments came after the role of the government when within a day Covid caused nearly 131 deaths in Delhi and 7,486 new cases
