The Union Power Minister of India, R K Singh, stated that India is one of the lowest carbon emitters globally and is now a leader in energy transition.
During the inaugural session of the first international conference on Green Hydrogen in New Delhi, Singh mentioned that India has already achieved its goal of reducing the emissions intensity of its GDP by 30% by 2030, nine years ahead of schedule. He also noted that India has fulfilled its commitment under the COP21 agreement, known as the Nationally Determined Contribution, ahead of time.
Singh highlighted the Indian government’s initiatives, such as the Ujala scheme, which focuses on the distribution of LED bulbs, as leading examples of carbon emission reduction measures. He emphasized the potential of green hydrogen as a future fuel in India and encouraged international industries to participate in India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Additionally, the Minister emphasized the importance of free trade and discouraging protectionist measures to achieve global net-zero emissions targets. Singh expressed the need for collaboration and cooperation among nations to address climate change effectively.
The three-day conference aimed to facilitate discussions and devise strategies to establish a Green Hydrogen ecosystem while working towards global decarbonization goals. Singh also highlighted India’s significant presence as the second-largest market for renewable energy, after China. He invited energy sector businesses to partner with India in accelerating the global energy transition.
