Arnab Goswami has been taken into custody by the police today. Arnab has also accused the police of beating him up.

Mumbai: The editor-in-chief of the Republic TV Arnab Goswami has been arrested by the police in Mumbai, Maharashtra today morning.

Police have taken Arnab Goswami into custody from his house. He has also accused the police of beating him up.

Mr. Prakash Javadekar on Twitter has condemned the action of the police on Arnab and termed it as an emergency.

Reacting to the arrest of r Arnab Goswami, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday condemned the Maharashtra police for attacking the ‘freedom of press’ and likened it to the emergency days.

Mr. Javdekar took on the microblogging site Twitter and he said, ‘We condemn the attack on press freedom in #Maharashtra. This is not the way to treat the Press. This reminds us of the emergency days when the press was treated like this.’

 

Case of abetment to suicide

Mumbai Police has arrested Arnab Goswami in a case of abetting 53-year-old interior designer Anvay Naik to commit suicide. It is said that Arnab has been detained in connection with an old abetment to suicide case.

Arnab was arrested by police in a case of abetting architect Anvay Naik to suicide. Architect Anway committed suicide in May 2018.

In his suicide note, Anvay alleged that he was forced to commit suicide. He mentioned non-payment of arrears of Rs 5.40 crore on Arnab.

It is said that Arnab will be taken to Raigad for questioning in connection with this case. Earlier on Wednesday, more than a dozen officers of Mumbai Police arrived at Arnab’s residence to take him into custody.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut defends

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut defended Arnab’s arrest, saying the state police followed the law. Mr. Raut said that the Maharashtra Police followed the law by arresting Arnab Goswami.

Police can take action should they have any evidence against anyone. He said that no retaliation action has been taken against anyone ever since the Uddhav Thackeray-led government came to power in the state.

Editors Guild condemns arrest

The Editors Guild of India has condemned the arrest of Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami terming it an extremely distressing move.

“We condemn the sudden arrest and find it extremely distressing”, The Guild said in a statement. The Republic TV editor claimed that he was thrashed and beaten by the Mumbai Police.

The Guild called upon Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to ensure that he is treated fairly and state power is not used against critical reporting by the media.

The Republic TV claimed that at the time of their Editor-in-Chief’s arrest, 8 police vehicles and at least 40-50 Police personnel were in the building premises out of which many were armed.
