Kolkata’s Law College Horror Sparks Outrage and Political Fallout

IndiaKolkata's Law College Horror Sparks Outrage and Political Fallout

Trinamool Congress MP’s Controversial Statement Following Alleged Gang-Rape Incident

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples of outrage across West Bengal, a 24-year-old female law student has alleged that she was gang-raped on the premises of South Calcutta Law College. The incident has attracted intense media coverage and political backlash, notably over controversial remarks made by senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee. The statement has not only ignited public outrage but has also initiated a political tug-of-war between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP.

The horrifying incident unfolded on a Wednesday evening when the victim was reportedly lured into a guard’s room adjacent to the student union office by three men, including Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student and practising criminal lawyer, along with two current students, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20). The survivor claims she was assaulted, physically harmed, and intimidated throughout the ordeal. The police investigation is currently underway, with the accused already arrested and their mobile devices seized for further examination.

As per the report by[The Times of India](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com), Banerjee’s comments regarding the incident have been met with widespread criticism for seemingly downplaying the severity of the crime and deflecting responsibility away from the institutions involved. He stated, “What can be done if a friend rapes his friend?” illustrating a mindset that many believe lacks accountability for both the assailants and the environment that fosters such violence against women.

Details of the Assault and Medical Evidence

The survivor’s account describes a harrowing experience where she alleges that after being lured into the room, she was locked in and assaulted by Mishra while Ahmed and Mukhopadhyay stood by, purportedly assisting the crime. The victim reported suffering a panic attack during the assault and even begged for her inhaler. Additionally, she alleges that she was threatened with death if she chose to speak out about the attack. According to medical reports, the victim exhibited signs of physical abuse, including bite marks and scratches, corroborating her claims of forced penetration.

In light of this serious incident, the police acted swiftly, arresting the accused and remanding them to custody for four days. Investigators are currently analyzing the seized mobile phones, fearing that there may be video recordings of the attack, as the survivor has alleged being filmed during her ordeal.

Political Reactions and Fallout

The political landscape has rapidly deteriorated in the wake of this incident. Banerjee’s comments have prompted the BJP to vocally criticize the TMC, accusing them of fostering an environment of impunity for rapists. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari condemned Banerjee’s statement, asserting that it trivializes the women’s safety concerns prevalent in the state. Adhikari remarked, “TMC MP comes out in support of rapists! In Kasba, a college student has been gang-raped by a TMCP leader and his gang. But TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee calls women’s safety concerns a mere ‘political agenda.’”

The BJP has also pointed out the alleged connections between the accused and the ruling party, emphasizing that political protection for rapists must not be tolerated. Photos depicting Monojit Mishra alongside TMC leaders, including MP Abhishek Banerjee and state Health Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, have surfaced, further complicating the narrative and leading to calls for protests.

Notably, the fallout around this case follows another high-profile incident from the previous year, where a medical intern was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College, illustrating a troubling trend of violence against women in educational institutions in West Bengal.

TMC’s Response and Efforts to Manage the Situation

In an effort to control the negative narrative and distance the party from the incident, TMC leaders have made statements reinforcing their stance against violence and reiterating that the accused will face justice regardless of their political connections. Bengal Women and Child Development Minister Shashi Panja emphasized, “We don’t want to politicize the pain of a woman. The police have acted. The accused will not be spared, irrespective of affiliation.”

TMCP state president Trinankur Bhattacharya attempted to divert attention from the alleged party connections of the accused. He stated that the South Calcutta Law College’s TMCP unit had been defunct since 2019, suggesting that the actions of individuals cannot be presumed to reflect the party’s values.

He stated, “He was not part of any committees in 2022 or 2023. He is not part of any committees now… But which party he belongs to is not important. He is a rapist; he should face justice.”

While these statements aim to depict the TMC as a party that respects women’s rights, the public’s confidence continues to wane as political disagreements persist. People are demanding that accountability not only rests on the individuals involved but also extends to the institutions and politicians that may have enabled this environment of violence.

The Broader Implications for Women’s Safety in West Bengal

The incident has illuminated deeper issues surrounding women’s safety in West Bengal, especially in educational institutions. It raises questions about the adequacy of safety measures for female students and the societal attitudes towards sexual violence. Despite efforts by the government to put protocols in place, many in the community remain unconvinced that real change is possible without addressing the societal mindsets that perpetuate violence against women.

The alarming frequency of such incidents gives rise to fears that the environment in which young women pursue their education remains fraught with risks. Continuing this dialogue is essential not only for the victims but also for the broader society to foster an atmosphere of accountability and protection for women.

As this case continues to unfold, public sentiment, political responses, and institutional reforms will undoubtedly shape the discourse around women’s safety in Kolkata and West Bengal at large.

The survivors’ courage to speak out and the necessity of accountability from both institutions and individuals should remain at the forefront of these discussions. Society stands at a crucial juncture, where the need for change can no longer be ignored, with women’s rights hanging in the balance.
