During his inaugural bilateral visit to Brunei, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the elevation of India-Brunei relations to an “Enhanced Partnership” status. Speaking at a banquet hosted by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, PM Modi emphasized the historical and cultural ties that have bonded the two nations, which are marking 40 years of diplomatic relations this year.

Highlighting the deepening cooperation, PM Modi stated, “We have decided to elevate our relationship to an Enhanced Partnership,” underlining a shared commitment to expanding collaboration in economic, scientific, and strategic sectors.

In their discussions, the leaders explored avenues for long-term collaboration in LNG and agreed to bolster cooperation in the space sector. PM Modi also announced the upcoming launch of direct flights between India and Brunei, which will further strengthen connectivity and people-to-people ties.

The focus will be on mutual cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, industry, pharmaceuticals, health, technology, and cyber security. The Prime Minister mentioned that the two countries have taken positive steps toward enhancing defense sector cooperation, including defense industry training and capacity building.

PM Modi also praised Brunei’s leadership under Sultan Bolkiah and acknowledged the significance of the country’s “Vision 2035” development plan. He commended the contributions of the Indian community in Brunei and expressed gratitude for the inauguration of the Indian High Commission in the country.

Furthermore, PM Modi reaffirmed Brunei’s crucial role in India’s Act East policy and the broader Indo-Pacific strategy, emphasizing India’s support for ASEAN centrality and adherence to international laws, such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

During his visit, the Prime Minister inaugurated the new Chancery of the Indian High Commission in Bandar Seri Begawan and paid a visit to the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.
