A week ago, entering the Test series, the notion of being one match down at home in a five-match series would have been inconceivable for Team India. However, the notable impact of Ollie Pope, Tom Hartley, and the collective efforts of Bazball in the series opener in Hyderabad, where England secured an impressive come-from-behind 28-run victory, has prompted a reassessment of strategies for the second Test at the ACA-VDCA Stadium starting on Friday.
An indication of this reconsideration was the adoption of the reverse sweep, a prominent feature of India’s training session at the stadium’s practice facilities on Wednesday. Almost every batsman was observed practicing the reverse sweep, a tactic that hasn’t been a notable focus in recent team net sessions before home Tests.
The Indian batsmen faced criticism for their overly defensive approach in the fourth innings in Hyderabad, chasing 231 on a wearing but not unplayable pitch. This approach made it easier for left-arm spinner Hartley, who claimed seven wickets in his debut Test.
For the upcoming second Test, with the batting lineup already missing Virat Kohli and now without KL Rahul (right quadriceps injury) and Ravindra Jadeja (left hamstring injury), intent becomes crucial. India’s batting coach, Vikram Rathour, emphasized the need for intent, stating, “If there is an opportunity to score some runs, they should take it. They need to decide by looking at the surface and conditions.”
