Health"Even normal people can't walk around in such situation" SC to hear plea

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a plea related to rising air pollution in Delhi as it noted “the issue requires intervention”.

‘Shut all schools till air quality improves,’ NCPCR warns Delhi government.  The warning came from NCPCR came as Delhiites woke up to a dense smog as air quality in the national capital and in adjoining regions, plunged into severe category again. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital at 8 AM was at 364 (in the `Very Poor` category) and at 7 AM the recorded AQI stood at 408 and air pollution is worsening day by day.

A lawyer mentioned the matter before a bench headed by Chief Justice UU Lalit, who said: “We will hear the case on November 10, Thursday. “We agree that the issue requires intervention. List it for hearing on November 10.”

The CJI, who will demit the office on November 8 said. The lawyer mentioned the matter for an urgent hearing before the apex court and sought immediate steps to curb stubble burning in adjoining Punjab and Haryana.

“Parali burning is one of the main reasons for the increase in air pollution in Delhi and NCR. Please hear the matter,” the lawyer pleaded. “Even normal people can’t walk around in such a situation. The AQI (Air Quality Index) level has risen due to stubble burning. 500 AQI has never been in Delhi. We can’t walk freely in this condition. Stubble burning has increased in Punjab. The Secretaries (concerned) must be called,” the lawyer told the court.

Diwali was also celebrated in Delhi which also exacerbated the air pollution.  With air pollution worsening in the national capital, Delhi authorities stopped all construction work and demolition activities till further orders. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has urged the Delhi government to shut schools till air quality improves.

Last year November 2021, the Supreme Court said that bureaucrats should talk to scientists and farmers to find a solution for the crisis arising due to pollution.

Delhi has been ranked as the most polluted city in the world.
