Was the Morbi bridge collapse culpable homicide or accident

UncategorizedWas the Morbi bridge collapse culpable homicide or accident

More than 140 died after Morbi Bridge crumpled into the Machchhu River in Gujarat`s Morbi city after it was just repaired.

Morbi Bridge was over a century-old suspension bridge.  At that time, over 500 people including women and children were on the suspended bridge when it collapsed. At first, the incident seems like a mishap, however, the analysis shows that it was not a mishap but culpable homicide.

While the bridge was recently repaired and was said to be strong to be used, the century-old bridge had been closed for nearly 6 months but crashed to pieces just five days after it was opened after being repaired.

The 143-year-old bridge which was 4 feet wide had a capacity of just 100 people but tickets were being sold until the bridge collapsed with nearly 500 people on it. The ticket for children was priced at Rs 12 and for adults, it was Rs 17.

While the Morbi municipality is claiming innocence saying that they had no information about the opening of the bridge, an opening ceremony was held for the reopening of the bridge repair and the event was organized by Orewa Group, the company that took the contract for the repair of the Morbi bridge.

Oreva company’s MD Jaisukh Bhai Patel was also present at the ceremony and the reopening of the bridge was announced on October 23 with the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the bridge was also declared fit for the opening. After this, the bridge was opened to the general public on 26 October. It is alleged that the bridge was opened early because of the Gujarati New Year

Crowds kept walking over the bridge for four days. And then on 30 October, the bridge tumbled. So the municipality by saying the bridge was opened without its permission is trying to escape from its responsibility.

It can be concluded that it was a mass murder just to gain more money and the bridge too was made of inferior material, attributed to the corruption of builders and politicians.

Dr. Shama Mohamed writes, “I am heartbroken. Out of the 140 people who died, 47 were children. I feel that the people who must first be booked are the Urban Development Minister of Gujarat & local corporators for giving the tender to the contractor. They should be booked for culpable homicide.”
