UK couple finds gold coins worth Rs 2.3 crore hidden under home

EconomyUK couple finds gold coins worth Rs 2.3 crore hidden under home

A couple finds gold coins worth Rs 2.3 crore under the home they’ve lived in for 10 years and the 264 gold pieces dated back 400 years.

This was uncovered during renovation work at the North Yorkshire home in July 2019, according to reports. The real worth of the coins was realized when experts looked at the contents of the can. Some of the gold coins date from 1610 to 1727, said reports.

The couple in the UK became richer by £2,50,000 (Rs 2.3 crores) after finding the huge stash of gold coins underneath the kitchen floor of the home they’ve lived in for 10 years.

After lifting the floorboards of their 18th-century property, they discovered the coins stored inside a metal can buried under six inches of concrete.  The real worth of the coins was learned when experts looked at the contents of the can. Some of the gold coins date from 1610 to 1727, said reports.

The expert analysis was done by London auctioneers Spink & Son, who visited the property at the request of the couple. Further analysis by the team revealed the coins originally belonged to the Fernley-Maisters, a wealthy merchant family from Hull.

“This is a fascinating and highly important discovery. It is extraordinarily rare for hoards of English gold coins to ever come onto the marketplace. This find of over 260 coins is also one of the largest on archaeological records from Britain. They’re not mint perfect coins, they are coins that have had a hard life,” auctioneer Gregory Edmund was quoted as saying Metro.co.uk.

“It is a wonderful and truly unexpected discovery from so unassuming a find location,” he added.

What an amazing way to suddenly stumble across treasures and turn rich overnight, if they get the money!
