Prince Charlie’s wife Camilla gets to be called Queen without its powers

WorldPrince Charlie's wife Camilla gets to be called Queen without its powers

Prince Charlie’s wife Camilla gets to be called Queen consort without the sovereign’s powers of a queen, Britain’s new “queen”.

After seven decades, Britain has a new woman to call queen.  Charles’ wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, would take the title while giving her none of the sovereign’s powers. Camilla will be known as Queen Consort – a title that came with Queen Elizabeth II’s endorsement after years of conflict, dating back to the days before she even married Prince Charles.

It wasn’t always a accepted that the 75-year-old Camilla would take the title. While generally, the wife of a king is traditionally crowned queen, the question of what title Camilla would hold when Charles became king had been tricky for many years.  By tradition, Camilla will be anointed at Charles’ coronation, although that could be skipped.

There was tremendous sensitivity about Camilla’s status as Charle’s second wife due to the tremendous grief that engulfed England following the death of his former wife, Princess Diana, in a car crash in 1997.

In a 2010 interview with NBC, Charles was asked if Camilla would become “Queen of England, if and when you become the monarch.” He hesitated as he replied, “That’s, well … We’ll see, won’t we? That could be.”

The question was resolved when Queen Elizabeth II in her valiant manner expressed she wanted Camilla to be known as Queen Consort after her son became king.

The difference between queen consort and queen regnant?

A Queen consort is a female partner, spouse, or companion to the King. The consort is not a formal role and is symbolic of the support the person gives the monarch. It is different from the queen regnant, who is the ruler in their own right, like Queen Elizabeth II.

About Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall

Over the decades, Camilla has won over large parts of the British public with her discretion, down-to-earth nature, and dedication to her husband.

Charles and Camilla married in 2005 in a private ceremony at the Guildhall in Windsor.

Since then, Camilla has taken up dozens of royal duties. She is the patron or president of more than 90 charities and has shown particular interest in working for animals, facilitating literacy, and empowering women. She is a good public speaker, earning respect by campaigning about difficult issues such as sexual violence against women and domestic abuse.
