Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited Vice President-elect Jagdeep Dhankhar and congratulated him on his winning.
The Vice Presidential election was against Opposition candidate Margaret Alva. The prime minister said, “Congratulations to Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji on being elected India’s Vice President with resounding support across party lines. I am confident he will be an outstanding Vice President. Our nation will gain tremendously from his intellect and wisdom,” he said in a tweet.
Thanking MPs who voted for Dhankhar, the Prime Minister added, “At a time when India marks Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, we are proud to be having a Kisan Putra Vice President who has excellent legal knowledge and intellectual prowess.”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also congratulated Jagdeep Dhankhar on being selected as the new Vice President. Birla appreciated Dhankar’s contribution to public life. He said that his long public life was devoted to the welfare of the common man and called his elevation to the post an “inspirational journey”.
In the Vice Presidential election on Saturday, Dhankhar clinched 528 votes while Opposition candidate Margaret Alva bagged 182. Jagdeep Dhankhar will take oath on August 14, a day after the present Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu’s term expires. The Vice President is mandated by the constitution to act as the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha
