After the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday sealed the premises of the Young India Private Limited office located at Herald House in the Central Delhi area in the continuing investigation of the National Herald case, Congress supporters reacted sharply.
The ED conducted raids at multiple locations including the National Herald office on Tuesday after that today it sealed the Young India office in its ongoing probe into the National Herald case. Last week, Congress president Sonia Gandhi was questioned three times and her Member of Parliament son Rahul Gandhi was also quizzed for five days over 50 hours by the ED at its headquarters.
On Wednesday, after heavy deployment of police personnel was done and barricades were put up outside the AICC office, in 24 Akbar Road. Ch. Anil Kumar, president Delhi Congress Unit, tweeted, “Why is the dictatorial government so afraid? Police are stopping us from going to our own office even though we have no protest.” “We are not afraid of arrest, if we protest, we will do it by telling, Now will the police stop us from meeting in our own office?,” Kumar added.
Congress leader Ajay Maken said that Congress was barred from carrying out a protest “We announced we will hold a protest against price rise… Today we received a letter from DCP that we cannot protest against price rise, unemployment and GST on food items.” Congress asks why is the BJP government afraid of protests against price rise, unemployment and other issues.
Yesterday, Congress workers including its women wing staged a protest outside Herald House against the ED raid on the National Herald newspaper office. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said the ED raid on several offices of the National Herald is a ‘political vendetta’.
There was no Evidence of a Fraudulent Deal and ED had Closed the Case Earlier
The original matter dates back to 2013 when BJP MP Subramanian Swamy had approached a trial court alleging that the Gandhis had fraudulently acquired the publishing company of the National Herald newspaper. However, finding no evidence of a crime, the ED had closed the case.
Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the Enforcement Directorate’s director had once closed the National Herald probe but the government replaced the director and got it reopened. Azad said the ED had sent a notice to the trustees of the “non-profit making” body. “The ED, however, later saw reason,” and its director decided to close the matter in August this year, he said.
He said the case was opened on the directions of the government and Subramanian Swamy, who has filed the petition in court. However, the ED can still find no money trail of corruption and the Congress claims this is a ploy to divert issues from the misgovernance of the BJP and silence and intimidate Congress.
