President Ram Nath Kovind in his farewell speech told the two houses to rise above partisan politics and think about countrymen.

Parliament hosted a farewell for the outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Cabinet ministers, and other MPs.

President Ram Nath Kovind said during his farewell address in the central hall of Parliament. “Political processes are guided by the systems of political parties. But Political parties should rise above ‘party politics’ and with the spirit of the nation, they should think that what all steps are necessary for the development and welfare of the countrymen.”

He said. “As in any family, sometimes there are differences of opinion even in Parliament. But we are all members of the ‘Parliament family’ whose top priority is to continue working in the interest of the big joint family of the nation,” he added. The President’s observation came amid frequent adjournments during the Monsoon Session in both Houses of Parliament over price rise, hike in GST, and other issues

Kovind said that there are many ways for political parties and citizens to express dissent. “Mahatma Gandhi had used Satyagraha, but he also respected the other side.” “MPs should always follow Gandhian philosophy while exercising rights of debate and dissent in Parliament,” he added.

He congratulated Droupadi Murmu on being elected as the next President, Kovind said that women’s empowerment will further strengthen in our society in the times to come. The swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Droupadi Murmu will take place on Monday in the central hall of the Parliament House.
