Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe died in hospital after he was shot at a political campaign event while giving a speech

Shinzo Abe was shot at twice while he was giving a speech in the southern city of Nara on Friday morning and instantly collapsed when a bullet hit him on the neck and traveled elsewhere.

Mr. Abe was said to be conscious and responsive in the minutes after the attack, but the 67-year-old’s situation later deteriorated and he received a blood transfusion in hospital, according to reports.  He later succumbed to his wounds.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency had earlier said that Mr Abe had a bullet wound on the right of his neck, and also suffered subcutaneous bleeding under the left part of his chest.

Security officials at the scene tackled the gunman, and the 41-year-old suspect is now in police custody.
Eyewitnesses said they saw a man carrying what they said was a huge gun and firing twice at Mr Abe from behind.  Security officers detained the attacker, dentified as Nara resident Tetsuya Yamagami, who did not try to run away and they seized his weapon which was reportedly a handmade gun.

Local media reports say that Nara is believed to be a former member of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force, Japan’s equivalent of a navy.

Mr Abe’s speech came as part of a campaign for his former party, the Liberal Democratic Party, as upper house elections in Japan are due to take place later this week.

Ministers across the country were later told to return to Tokyo immediately, according to local reports.

“Officials at the hospital where former Japan PM Shinzo Abe died confirm he had no vital signs when he arrived. They tried resuscitation; Abe passed away at 5:03 pm local time. Doctors say he lost a lot of blood after gunshot wounds to his chest and neck” says NBC News.

Brahma Chellaney, author and thinker writes, “The assassin of Shinzo Abe, the architect of the Quad and the author of the “free and open Indo-Pacific” concept, has ensured that Abe’s legacy will live on forever. Abe, 67, was shot moments after this Kyodo picture was taken in the city of Nara. He died in hospital.

Horrific visuals of the killing.

Even though Mr Abe had security, the shooter was still able to get close enough and kill him

On Japanese social media, the hashtag “We want democracy, not violence” was trending, with many social media users expressing their horror and disgust towards the incident.

Sources say that gun violence is very rare in Japan, and guns are extremely difficult to own. Political violence is also extremely rare and this was a handmade gun.
Even though Mr Abe had a team of security police with him, the shooter was still able to get to within a few meters of him without any checks.

The shooting of such a famous leader is stunning in a country that prides itself on being so safe.

Stunned Responses from India and the Globe

Shinzo Abe is a Japanese politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democratic Party from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. He was the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history.

The assassination of Shinzo Abe former Japanese PM holds the world in shock in a fast-growing weaponized world. He was the architect of the Quad, author of the “free and open Indo-Pacific” concept, and nationalist, dynast, and championed a revival in the economic and military strength of a country that began to stagnate in the 1990s and strengthened Indo-Japan ties.
