Raja Warring takes over from Navjot Sidhu as Punjab Congress chief

IndiaRaja Warring takes over from Navjot Sidhu as Punjab Congress chief

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday appointed Raja Warring as the new Punjab chief in place of Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday appointed Amarinder Singh Brar (Raja Warring) as the party’s new Punjab chief in place of Navjot Singh Sidhu who had to resign after the party lost power in Punjab.

Sonia Gandhi has also appointed former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu as the Working President of Punjab Congress and SC leader Raj Kumar Chabbewal as deputy CLP leader in the state assembly and the positions bear the stamp of Rahul Gandhi who had appointed Mr. Raja Warring as Indian Youth Congress president and Pratap Singh Bajwa as Punjab Congress chief a few years back.

There is an upbeat feeling among the Congress about this new appointment after their stinging loss in Punjab and this might be the best decision at this time and better late than never.

About Raja Warring

Raja Warring was previously the president of the Indian Youth Congress, the youth division of the Indian National Congress, from December 2014 to May 2018. and is an elected Member of the Legislative Assembly from Gidderbaha.  He was elected as an MLA for the second successive time in March 2017 after completing his first term from 2012–to 2017. He also served as the Transport Minister in the Punjab government.

Warring contested from Bathinda constituency in the 2019 Indian general election against Harsimrat Kaur Badal but lost by over 20,000 votes.  During the crusade for the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election, Warring sang songs and danced during his public meetings. His associates said this was done to “to strike a chord with commoners” and he won the election.

In March 2022, when CM designate Bhagwant Mann took steps to end the VIP culture and ordered to remove the police security from 122 former MLAs and ministers. A total of 384 policemen of the state, involved in the security of those politicians were transferred to their parent unit. Mann had stated that the police force was needed for the security of the people and not VIPs. As ordered, 21 security personnel, the largest on the list were withdrawn from the service of Warring.
