IndiaMK Stalin asks permission from center to help Tamils in Sri Lanka's crisis

Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday asked the center for permission to help Tamils in Sri Lanka during its severe economic crisis.

MK Stalin wants to send essential commodities and medicines to Tamils living in northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka during the catastrophic situation.  Hundreds march to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s house as there is no food, electricity, and basic essentials.  There is no money to manufacture paper and schools have closed down due to a lack of books during the crisis of paper.  All people experienced 13-hour-long power cuts amid Sri Lanka’s worsening economic meltdown.  Many hold posters with anti-government slogans demanding that the government step out immediately, having “mishandled” the country’s economy.

“The union government should permit us to help Lankan Tamils in economic distress. The Prime Minister patiently listened and has assured us to act on our demands. I thank him for his assurance,” Mr Stalin said.

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin in his meeting with PM Modi today discussed the economic condition in Sri Lanka. He proposed to send relief materials including food and medicines from Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also made 14 demands to the central government, including they should say no to Karnataka’s Makedatu Reservoir project across river Cauvery.  MK Stalin said the PM has assured them appropriate action will be taken on the issues raised by him.

The DMK chief is leading the third-largest parliamentary party, is now aiming for a national role, advocating the cause of social justice and federalism. The inauguration of the party’s office in Delhi on Friday would also bring together opposition leaders Sonia Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Left leaders and many others, after the Congress’ recent poll debacle.

DMK MP Dr Kanimozhi NVN Somu told NDTV, “He has always toiled for the people. Why shouldn’t we think of him as a PM candidate? There’s nothing wrong.”

Emerging as a mass leader with three successive poll victories, Mr. Stalin is slowly but steadily aiming for a national role though it may be tough to unite the opposition ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is a political party based in the state of Tamil Nadu where it is currently the full-majority ruling party and in the union territory of Puducherry where it is currently the main opposition, a Justice Party, has aims of social equality and justice, and came to power in the first general elections to the Madras Presidency in 1920
