New Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tells Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, that he wants peace between neighbors India and Pakistan.

While Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wants peaceful ties with India and it is known that the dynasty of the Sharifs prefers friendly ties with India, the unofficial reality of Pakistan it is the Army and the ISI who make that ultimate call.

PM Modi congratulated Shehbaz Sharif in a tweet. “Congratulations to H. E. Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on his election as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. India desires peace and stability in a region free of terror so that we can focus on our development challenges and ensure the well-being and prosperity of our people.”

Shehbaz Sharif responded a day after Modi’s tweet on Tuesday and said, “Thank you Premier Narendra Modi for felicitations. Pakistan desires peaceful and cooperative ties with India. Peaceful settlement of outstanding disputes including Jammu and Kashmir is indispensable. Pakistan’s sacrifices in fighting terrorism are well-known. Let’s secure peace and focus on socio-economic development of our people,” Sharif said in a tweet.

On Monday, Shehbaz Sharif, the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif, was elected unopposed as the prime minister of Pakistan following weeks of drama over a no-confidence motion. Soon after his election.

Who is Shehbaz Sharif

Shehbaz Sharif is the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif, a three-time former Pakistani prime minister. The family’s wealth emanates largely from the Ittefaq Group steelmaker co-founded by their industrialist father, Muhammad Sharif.

Shehbaz Sharif first rose to power as the chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab in 1997 and was praised for his good governance.  His term was cut unexpectedly short in 1999 when former Gen. Pervez Musharraf led a military coup against his elder brother, due in part to a breakdown of relations between the government and the powerful military. Shehbaz Sharif was briefly imprisoned in Pakistan, before going into self-imposed exile in Saudi Arabia with his family.

He returned to Pakistan in 2007 and was re-elected chief minister of Punjab the following year. His term was popular and well-known for infrastructure projects and the promotion of good education and industry growth.

On his appointment as Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif called for “unity” and vowed to repair the country’s damaged economy after he was sworn in as Prime Minister Monday following the expulsion of Imran Khan.
