India"Democracy attacked", Mamata urges Oppn meet; Singhvi backs her

WB CM Mamata Banerjee wrote to non-BJP CMs, oppn leaders to fight against BJP, “expressing concern over BJP’s direct attacks on democracy”

Mamata Banerjee expresses alarm over the manner in which central agencies are being used by the BJP to “target, harass and corner political opponents.”

‘I urge that all of us come together for a meeting to deliberate on the way forward at a place as per everyone’s convenience & suitability,’ the letter reads

She wrote the letter on Tuesday to non-BJP CMs and opposition leaders exhorting everyone to come together in the fight against the saffron party. In her letter, Mamata alleged that central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate, CBI, Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Income Tax Department are being used to “target, harass and corner political opponents across the country for vendetta”.

She said, “We all must resist the ruling BJP’s intention to misuse these central agencies with the sole intent of suppressing opposition leaders. Central agencies are jolted to action just when elections are around the corner,” Mamata wrote in her letter. “We believe in transparency and accountability in governance but we will not tolerate the vindictive politics of the BJP that has led to a political witch-hunt,” she said.

Mamata called for a meeting to discuss strategies to take on the BJP and commit to the cause of a unified and principled opposition that will make way for the “government that the country deserves”. “As the opposition parties, it is our constitutional responsibility to hold this government accountable for their actions, to resist the stifling of voices of dissent,” the West Bengal chief minister said. “I urge that everyone of us come together for a meeting to deliberate on the way forward at a place as per everyone’s convenience and suitability. The need of the hour is for all progressive forces in this country to come together and fight this oppressive force,” she added.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi on Wednesday expressed that Mamata Banerjee is a pillar of the non-BJP opposition in the country, which is the need of the hour. The tweet from the Congress leader comes a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, presently mired in the Birbhum massacre case, wrote to all opposition leaders on uniting against the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Mamata previously questioned Congress’s role as the Opposition, but her letter has reached Congress as well in which she wrote how the BJP is trying the attack the federal structure of the country.

“Non-BJP opposition is the need of the hour. Mamata is a pillar of that. Each element has to unite synergically to prevent vote division, state by state, for 2024. BJP’s best wins never exceed 39% of the popular vote. Mamata and all others have to strain every sinew to unite the non-BJP space,” Singhvi tweeted.

Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi says Mamata pillar of non-BJP opposition

What Congress’s Rajya Sabha MP thinks of Mamata is not echoed by the party leaders in the state as Adhir Chowdhury said Mamata sometimes wants to unite against BJP and then sometimes against BJP and the Congress.

Singhvi’s opinion however is not what the party leaders in the state said as Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury questioned Mamata’s stance and said her stance changes day and night. “West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee sometimes says that everyone should get united against BJP, sometimes against BJP and Congress, and other times she says Congress should be finished. Her statements change day and night,” Chowdhury said.

Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao has already given a clarion call for a united opposition minus the Congress and met Shiv Sena leader, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray who is an ally of the Congress in the state.

In December, when Mamata visited Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, she said there is no UPA left in the country.

Presently, Mamata is facing flak over the horrific Birbhum massacre, and Adhir Chowdhury of Congress expresses that Mamata sometimes wants to unite against BJP and then sometimes against BJP and the Congress, so will she succeed in bringing the Opposition together? The way things are going, there is a weak Opposition unable to challenge the BJP perhaps because the Opposition is not uniting among themselves, and one opposition political party is still very divided among themselves openly.
