Gulf Daily News reports authorities in Bahrain shut down Lanterns, an Indian restaurant after denying entry to a woman wearing a veil.
The Indian eatery in Bahrain Lanterns has been shut down after denying entry to a woman wearing a veil and the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority has begun an investigation into the matter. The local media quoted authorities as saying, “We reject all actions that discriminate against people, especially regarding their national identity,”
The alleged incident took place in Lanterns restaurant which is situated in the Adliya area of Bahrain’s capital Manama. On 24 March, the restaurant said that the manager, who erred in this particular incident, has been suspended.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Laterns also welcomed Bahraini citizens to have complimentary food at the restaurant on 29 March “as a goodwill gesture”.
“Everyone is welcome to Lanterns as how it has been for more than 35 years that we have been serving all nationalities in the beautiful Kingdom of Bahrain. Lanterns is a place for everyone to come enjoy with their families and feel at home. In this instance, a mistake has been made by a manager who is now being suspended as this does not represent who we are. As a goodwill gesture, we welcome all our Bahraini patrons to Lanterns on Tuesday 29th of March to have complimentary food on us,” the statement read.
Earlier in February 2022, OIC, an organization of Muslim countries involved in the hijab controversy expressed that India should ensure the safety of Muslims in India.
The owner of Lantern’s restaurant is of Indian origin, and the manager who blocked the woman from entering was British.
Social media user @Mariam1597, who had earlier posted about the incident from her Twitter account on the 26th of March, revealed that the manager was British, and not Indian.
The truth is the manager is British not indian 🙏🏼 https://t.co/QBIb4eO71J
