Bengal Birbhum massacre: 2 children among 12 charred to death

IndiaBengal Birbhum massacre: 2 children among 12 charred to death

In the Birbhum massacre in Bengal, 2 children among 12 charred to death, children watched; a boy witnessed his entire family being burnt alive.

National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has requested SP Birbhum, West Bengal to conduct an investigation in the Birbhum massacre and present a report within 3 days. The mob set fire to the houses to exact revenge for the assassination of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, Bhadu Pradhan.

No one is quite sure who is behind the fire though TMC  is suspected.  Union Home Ministry has sought a report from the Bengal government over the killing of the 12 people in violence.

Meantime, the Child Rights body requested SP Birbhum to give a report within 3 days.  Unfortunately, 8 persons, including 2 children, died on Tuesday after their houses were set on fire in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.  This move came after a nine-member delegation of BJP MPs from West Bengal met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and sought his intervention and action against the perpetrators of the crime.

Sources said a fact-finding central team may be sent to the state soon to assess the situation, but there was no official confirmation about it yet. In a communication, the ministry asked the West Bengal government to maintain law and order and ensure the security of common people in view of the killings, officials said.

The state government has been asked to send a detailed factual report on the killings as early as possible, they said. National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has requested SP Birbhum, West Bengal to conduct an investigation in the Birbhum incident and submit a report within 3 days.

The nine-member delegation of BJP MPs, in a memorandum to the home minister, alleged that the post-poll violence in West Bengal has been continuing unabated and the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated.

On talking about the Birbhum massacre, the MPs claimed that 10 people were burnt to death following the killing of the Panchayat Up-Pradhan (deputy head) in the area. They urged Shah that a strong note should be taken of the fact that the panchayat leader was killed in a bomb attack.

“The increasing use of explosives and firearms points towards terrorists being actively used by the TMC to settle political scores and to spread terror among the common citizens,” the MPs told the home minister.

The MPs asked Amit Shah to take note of the “rapidly deteriorating law and order situation” in the state and take appropriate action as required to bring this spate of violence under control.

“We cannot allow the lives of our citizens to be put at risk under increasing political terrorism in the state anymore. We will remain grateful for your timely intervention, and strictest of actions against the perpetrators,” the delegation said.

The MPs also briefed the home minister about the political violence which took place in West Bengal in the recent past. They alleged that over 50 BJP supporters were killed by “TMC goons” in the state after the 2021 assembly polls.

The MPs claimed that there was an attempt to kill BJP MP from Ranaghat constituency Jagannath Sarkar on March 19.

“Political terrorists backed by the ruling party hurled bombs at him. Thankfully he escaped the attack unharmed. On March 15, intra-party rivalry saw the killing of newly elected TMC councilor Anupam Dutta in North 24 Parganas and Congress councilor Tapan Kundu in Purulia,” they said.

In the Birbhum massacre, a boy witnessed his entire family being burnt alive. He was initially thought missing and murdered because he was the main witness to the massacre.  He was admitted to Rampurhat Hospital for his severe burn injuries but was later missing adding to the frenzy of the people surmising harm done to him being the main witness.  He was later found undergoing treatment in Suri Medical College, is now under police protection as he is the main witness to the crime.

The nation has been strangely silent over such a horrific murder. Our political representatives are here to protect the people.  Still, one is not sure which political party has actually set up the massacre to defame another. One cannot be too sure of anything nowadays unless a proper independent investigation without political influence takes place.

Congress tweeted, “Being burnt alive is the worst pain a human can experience.

Seeing small bodies of children burnt is just painful. #BirbhumMassacre”
