PoliticsRussia announces end of Crimea military drills, troops leaving

Russia announces the end of Crimea military drills and the troops are now leaving with the soldiers returning to their garrisons.

Russia on Wednesday said that military drills in Moscow-annexed Crimea had ceased and that soldiers were returning to their garrisons, a day after it announced a first troop pullback from Ukraine’s borders.

On Tuesday some of its military units were returning to their bases after exercises near Ukraine and mocked repeated Western warnings

Ukraine said on Tuesday that the sites of the country’s defense ministry and armed forces, as well as two state banks, were struck by a cyberattack that could have Russian origins.

The announcement from Ukraine’s communications watchdog comes with the former Soviet republic worrying about a possible invasion from Russian forces conducting massive military drills at its frontiers.

A Russian attack on Ukraine is “still very much a possibility” and the human cost would be “immense”, US President Joe Biden has said.

In remarks televised nationally, he said the US was ready to respond decisively to such a move and Mr Biden said Russia had massed some 150,000 troops on Ukraine’s borders.

Russia says it is pulling back some of its troops. On Wednesday, it announced that military drills in Moscow-annexed Crimea had ended.

“Units of the Southern Military District, having completed their participation in tactical exercises, are moving to their permanent deployment points,” the defense ministry said in a statement, without detailing how many troops were leaving.

Footage broadcast on state television appeared to show military vehicles crossing the bridge to leave Crimea.

But Western leaders remain cautious, with Mr. Biden saying on Tuesday that while Russian forces leaving “would be good”, it had not yet been verified.

“Indeed, our analysts indicate that they remain very much in a threatening position,” he said.

For now, the tense situation appears to have abated, but all eyes are still glued on Russia at this time and the US has said, “The US will defend every inch of Nato territory.”
