Why do Indian students go to Ukraine to study MBBS and not India? How much does it cost to study medicine in Ukraine?
Every year thousands of students from India flock to Ukraine, America, Canada, Australia, and other countries to study medicine. Many of these students also go to Ukraine. One might question what is so special about studying in Ukraine that is lacking in India and what is the reason for this?
Let Us Analyze Why Indian students go to Ukraine to study MBBS.
If we talk about private MBBS college running in India, then the fees for the entire course are more than a staggering Rs 1 crore, which is very unaffordable for the brilliant middle class of India.
If you are wondering how many MBBS seats are there in India, then there are a total of 1,18,316 seats in India out of which about 40% of seats are reserved for private medical colleges.
Only those who come with merit under the purview of reservation get admission. Now the government gives 73% reservations in medical studies all over the country so many brilliant students who do not come under reservations may not get a chance to get into medical college. In such a situation, the general category of medical students does look abroad.
One would imagine that medical education abroad is extremely expensive, but in reality, it is not so, and medical education is the cheapest in Ukraine, in particular. In Ukraine, MBBS is completed within five years within just a very affordable Rs. 20 lakh and here in India, one has to spend a skyrocketing 1 crore fee, exorbitantly charged for medium budgets. Every year around 700 students from Madhya Pradesh head to Ukraine for their MBBS.
In the NEET exam held last year, 16 lakh 19 thousand students appeared, of which only 77,000 were selected to study in government colleges. The cost of medical education in a government college is only Rs. 4 to 5 lakh, while in a private medical college goes up to 1 crore and in Ukraine Rs. 20 lakh as mentioned earlier.
On reviewing about MBBS in America, this education is finished here for a pricey Rs. 8 crore rupees, whereas in Kazakhstan, it only takes only Rs. 25 lakhs while in Britain would be 40 million, Canada 40 million, Australia, New Zealand 40 million and fees apply. That is why students run towards Ukraine and the affluent class mostly choose America to study medicine.
Considering this inflation for MBBS studies in India, studying MBBS abroad is considered a good and leisurely option. However, as soon as you come back to India after completing the course, you have to appear for the MCI Screening Test or FMGE.
If a student goes back to India from the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand after completing the MBBS course, then they do not have to do FMGE, (Foreign Medical Graduates Examination). But as one is informed, the cost of doing the medical course from these five countries is normally more than Rs. 4 crores.
To top it all, in the USA, the UK, and Canada, the duration of medical colleges is eight to nine years as one needs to do a pre-medical course first out of four. After completing the pre-medical course, one has to tediously appear for the admission test again. That is why very few students are interested in studying in these countries.
These factors raise a tiny nation like Ukraine as the most conceivable choice as it is the most affordable and easiest option for medical studies, neither is it an expensive country to live in nor too costly to study. There are presently 20,000 Indian students studying in Ukraine!
