Darjeeling 2022 saw thick winter snowfalls in January and the usually misty gloomy Ghoom transformed into a winter fairytale magic land.
Darjeeling and Sikkim winter snow cast its magic over the region with its mesmerizing glistening snowclad beauty causing people to play joyfully in the snow, making snowballs playfully indulging in happy snow fights, snowmen, and taking long drives in the lightly falling snow.
Ghoom was covered in a blanket of snow with freezing dips in mercury with all the people clad heavily in warm jackets, sipping hot tea or Thukpa, (Tibetan noodle soup) and eating steaming momos (Tibetan and Nepalese dumpling dish) or sizzling Samosas. However, as standard in the hills, hill people can sturdily bear the freezing chilly climate without much-added gear or boots unlike the people from the warmer regions, and here is an adventurous family braving the subzero temperatures out on the rocky roads and standing on the famous Darjeeling toy train railway tracks!
Here is a picture of the town Ghoom, one of the highest points on the way to the main town of Darjeeling, usually enshrouded in thick swirling gray fogs was for once enchantingly lit up with tiny glowing white snowflakes. Tourists are flocking to Darjeeling and Sikkim during this time of the year to experience the snowfall.
In Sandakphun, the highest point in West Bengal, the temperature dropped below zero degrees Celsius. “Places such as Tiger Hill, one of the most renowned sunrise spots in Darjeeling and Mt Kancendzonga received snowfall. There was tremendous snowfall on Wednesday snowfall was massive. The entire Tiger Hill has come under a dense blanket of snow.

The snow disrupted normal life in parts of Sikkim as electricity and mobile networks were cut off. The army earlier rescued over 1,000 tourists stranded near the India-China border in eastern Sikkim on Sunday.
Vehicles are seen encased in thick dazzling snow in Lachung in the state of Sikkim after a stretch of dense snowfall where many tourist vehicles were stranded in many areas as Darjeeling in West Bengal and the neighboring state of Sikkim.
While the snowfall is expected to attract more tourists to the hills, locals in high-altitude areas of Sikkim such as Lachung have tourists to avoid visiting the region until the weather improves.

It was reported that the weather was warm in Lachung till Tuesday evening. The weather changed suddenly and [the temperature] dipped below zero [degrees Celsius], resulting in massive snowfall since the early hours of Wednesday. This is attracting more tourists say the locals.

Residents said roads leading to tourist destinations such as Nathu La, Gurudongmar, Yumthang, and Tsomgo lake were covered with snow and become slippery and hazardous to drive.
