Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter account was “very briefly compromised” in the wee hours of Sunday morning, but restored shortly after.

During the time the account was compromised, a tweet was sent falsely saying, “India has officially adopted bitcoin as a legal tender. The government has officially bought 500 BTC and is distributing them to all residents of the country,” read the now-deleted tweet.

After this tweet was deleted, a fresh tweet confirming that the previous tweet was sent by a hacker read,  “The Twitter handle of PM @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured. In the brief period that the account was compromised, any Tweet shared must be ignored,” PMO India tweeted.

The account has now been restored and the false tweets have been deleted. PM Modi has over 73.4M followers on the micro-blogging site.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter account was compromised, #Hacked began trending in India.

Earlier, in September 2020, the Twitter account, which updates Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal website and mobile app was hacked by an unknown group.
