Omicron variant updates: Mumbai cases are 70% higher than yesterday, Delhi sees a 50% increase; the government approves two more vaccines.
The government has approved two more vaccines – Corbevax, Covovax- and anti-viral drug Molnupiravir for emergency use. India has reported 6,358 Covid-19 cases and 293 deaths in 24 hours, the health ministry said on Tuesday.
The Omicron tally in the country stands at 655. The government said 186 people have so far recovered from the new variant. The active caseload has declined to 75,456. Stay with TOI for all updates
Delhi on Tuesday reported 496 new COVID-19 cases — highest since June 4 — and one death in the last 24 hours taking the infection tally to 14,44,179 and toll to 25,107. The positivity rate for the day stood at 0.89 percent. As many as 172 recoveries were recorded in the last 24 hours, while the active caseload stood at 1,612. The total number of cases of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 recorded in the national capital has risen to 165, according to data shared by the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the DDMA on Tuesday ordered the closure of schools, colleges, cinemas, and gyms with immediate effect and put various restrictions on the functioning of shops and public transport as a yellow alert was sounded under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the city due to the rise in COVID-19 cases.
Night curfew will now be imposed from 10 pm (earlier 11 pm) to 5 am in the national capital.
