The Samyukta Kishan Morcha on Thursday called off the year-long farmers’ agitation after the Centre accepted all the farmers’ demands.
The farmers are taking down their tents, preparing for their exodus back to their homes. They will celebrate Vijay Diwas on Saturday after that all the morchas and borders are cleared, the SKM leaders told media persons.
SKM said the Centre has guaranteed that all cases registered in various states against the farmers during the protest will be taken back very soon. The Centre said it has been assured by five States regarding this, and two states have given their consents to provide ex-gratia to the farmers.
SKM has therefore decided to suspend its protest which had started against the three contentious farm laws. Farmers will, however, reconvene again on December 15 to review their demands and the action of the governments. SKM said it is the victory of farmers who have been protesting for the last year to get their demands fulfilled. Soon after the announcement of the end of the protest, the protesting farmers started uprooting their tents and have started going back to their villages.
SKM leaders said that it will examine the situation from time to time to verify whether the Centre has fulfilled the farmers’ demands or not. SKM on Wednesday confirmed that they have received a revised draft proposal from the Centre and a consensus had been reached among themselves, accepting the proposal.
