In Assam, Congress suspends MLA Sherman Ali for making provocative and communal statements, removed for repeat violations.
The party said this occurred due to “repeatedly violating party discipline”. The decision of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) comes after Ali’s failure to reply to the show-cause notice served to him.
MLA Ali in a statement in the backdrop of the eviction drive which turned violent justified the killing of eight people in Darrang district in 1983 during the Assam agitation, who were declared martyrs.
Ali was arrested by police on Saturday from his residence in MLA Hostel at Dispur for making “communal and provocative” remarks. The order, issued by Bobbeeta Sharma, general secretary, APCC, says: “Hon’ble president APCC Bhupen Kumar Borah has suspended Sri Sherrnan Ali Ahmed, member ACLP from Congress Party with immediate effect for repeatedly violating party discipline.” T
The Assam Congress gave a show-cause notice to Sherman Ali on October 1, 2021, for his remarks against martyrs of Assam agitation and he was given three day’s time to submit his reply. As the MLA failed to reply within three days of the issuance of the notice, APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah ordered his suspension from the party on Monday with immediate effect. Sherman Ali is currently under the custody of the Assam Police. The court remanded Baghbor MLA Ali to two-day police custody with effect from Sunday.
