Petrol and diesel prices are skyrocketing and it appears while no one is watching, petrol and diesel have been hiked 9 times in the last 10 days and in some cities, they are touching ₹100.

In the middle of the pandemic, when thousands of lives are being lost and Indians are caught up in their grief, prices of petrol and diesel are insidiously rising.

Below are the updated petrol and diesel prices across four metropolitan cities:

City Petrol Diesel
Delhi 92.58 88.22
Mumbai 98.88 90.40
Chennai 94.31 88.07
Kolkata 92.67 86.06

The state-run oil marketing companies including Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum adjust the rates of domestic fuel with the global crude oil prices by taking into account changes in the foreign exchange rates. Any changes in fuel prices are executed with effect from 6 am every day.

Angry voices of Indians are exploding because of this indiscriminate tax-raising which is ripping the economy with resultant hikes on other products as well.  They are saying that when the government does not pay for their own fuel, it does not hurt them to increase the fuel prices.

It appeared to be very insensitive of the government to inflict such a burden on the people because, with the hike in fuel prices, commodities automatically will do up with the rise in transport expenditure.

It is unfortunate that at such a grievous time when people have lost jobs, loved ones and financial losses are heaping up, in such a time in India when the poor cannot afford wood to cremate their dead and when the government hikes up fuel, this can only be described as a criminal act!
