Rahul Gandhi Congress leader said, “Central Vista is criminal wastage. Put people’s lives at the centre- not your blind arrogance to get a new house!” His statement seemed to echo millions of Indian sentiments as the country is going through one of the worst crises ever.
Earlier Rahul Gandhi said, “Focus On Oxygen, Vaccine”: Rahul Gandhi On Centre’s Move On Central Vista Project. His comments come a day after he questioned the government’s priority in going ahead with the Central Vista project in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today, the Supreme Court refused to hear a petition to stop construction work on the Central Vista plan at Rajpath and India Gate in Delhi. The Supreme Court said the case is pending before the Delhi High Court and asked the petitioner to request the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court for an early hearing.
The Centre had objected to the request by petitioner Anya Malhotra. While senior advocate Sidharth Luthra, appearing for the petitioner, argued that COVID-19 will peak in May and there is a 30 per cent increase in cases from April. He said construction work at a 3.5 km stretch around India Gate should be suspended in the circumstances.
However, the Centre was unwilling to consider suspending the construction work and are determined to go ahead with the build in the midst of the worst pandemic.
The wailing of mourning loved ones and prayers ascend on the lighting fires of funeral pyres and shadows sink into the night while thousands around are dying in rising numbers. India is facing its worst medical crisis since 1947 and this was not the time to lavish on Central Vista. The decision of the Center seemed “heartless” to many.
