IndiaRajya Sabha Deputy Chairman adjourns House when Congress MPs demand a discussion on fuel price rise

Congress MPs raised slogans in the Rajya Sabha on Monday demanding a discussion on rising fuel prices at which point the session was adjourned till 11 am.  The Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said, “I don’t want to take any drastic action on the first day,” when the Congress MP raised slogans.

Before adjourning the House until 1 pm, he said, “You are aware that the ruling of the Chairman can’t be reopened. It can’t be discussed,” to the Congress MPs who were adamant to raise a discussion on high spiked fuel prices.

The skyrocketing historical fuel prices are concerning for citizens as it will eventually affect transport, where commodities and goods’ prices will also spiral up.

Subsidized gas cylinder prices skyrocketed and in just over 2 months, the prices rose to Rs. 175, in December 2020, the price rose by Rs 100, on February 4, 2021, the price rose by Rs 25, and on February 14, 2021, the price rose again to Rs 50.

It was therefore a very contentious issue and the Congress had earlier released a video highlighting the differences in fuel prices between the UPA and the BJP
