Washington: After assuming the US presidential post, Mr. Joe Biden first spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau among foreign leaders. According to a White House statement issued late Friday, ‘President Biden first spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as President of the United States.’
Joe Biden highlighted the strategic importance of US-Canada relations and emphasized strengthening bilateral cooperation on an ambitious and broad-based agenda.
According to the White House, the two leaders discussed a range of issues, including cooperation on the Covid epidemic, tackling climate change, economic and defense ties, as well as strengthening global leadership.
Mr. Biden felt the Canadian Prime Minister’s ‘disappointment’ about the decision to cancel the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline.
Former US President Donald Trump’s Climate Policy
Mr. Biden’s first task as president was to suspend the construction of the controversial oil pipeline. The project was estimated to carry 8 million barrels of oil per day from the oil sands of Alberta to several countries in the US states.
Joe Biden promised to backtrack on former US President Donald Trump’s climate policy. Along with the cancellation of the pipeline, he rejoined the country in the Paris Agreement in his first set of executive orders.
Mr. Biden (78) was sworn in as the 49th President of the US in a historic ceremony on Wednesday. The Democratic leader was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Chief Justice John Roberts at the ‘West Front’ of the Capitol Building.
Before Mr. Biden, Kamala Harris assumed the position of the first female Vice President of the country. She is the 46th Vice President of the country. Mr. Biden said after taking the oath “We will try to unite America.”
