Since assuming office in July last year (2019), Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has been a critic of Governor Mamata Banerjee and her government. The relationship between the two is extremely tense
Kolkata: Five Trinamool Congress MPs wrote a letter to the President demanding the removal of Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, saying that the Governor is acting with political bias and is openly violating the Constitution.
MPs Sandeep Bandhu Padhyay, Derek O’Brien, Kalyan Banerjee, Sukhinder Shekhar Rai and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar jointly signed the letter. The letter said that the Governor is constantly destabilizing the mission of the state government.
The letter was written against the governor at a time when the assembly elections are nearing and the political atmosphere in Bengal is tense. The governor is seen criticizing the West Bengal government.
The MPs wrote in their letter that the Governor is constantly making statements and posting tweets against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress. Due to this, law and order can deteriorate.
The letter states that such tendencies do not embellish a constitutional head. The Governor’s open move in support of a political party is detrimental to the federal structure of the country. The letter says that the Governor is trying to control the Election Commission and independent bodies like the Comptroller and Auditor General.
Governor’s demand for an apology is unfair
Seeking an apology from Mamata Banerjee for the attack on the convoy of BJP National President JP Nada earlier this month is an unfair and grave mistake for the Governor.
It has been written in the letter that the governor has not even spared the state assembly. He is refusing to sign several bills passed by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Not only is he not signing the bills, but he is also seeking clarification from the speaker. By doing so, he is insulting the office of the Speaker. This is a direct insult to the sovereignty of the state assembly.
Since assuming office in July last year (2019), he has been a critic of Governor Mamata Banerjee and her government. The relationship between the two is extremely tense.
On the other hand, while supporting the Governor in this whole matter, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Kailash Vijay Varghese said that the Governor works according to his constitutional parameters. The Trinamool Congress is afraid of this. Kailash Vijay Varghese said, ‘I don’t think the MP’s letter will help to remove the Governor.”
