Prime Minister Johnson ordered Cummings to leave amid allegations that he was making statements against him and his fiancée Carrie Symonds, while the Times quoted sources as saying that Cummings had “decided to leave early”.
London: Dominic Cummings, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s most powerful ally and the divisive figure behind the United Kingdom’s 2016 campaign to leave the European Union has resigned with immediate effect following a power struggle inside Downtreat Street.
Cummings, who was expected to hold on to his post until the end of the year, was seen exiting 10 Downing Street from the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday, according to a BBC report.
Conflicting reports have surfaced regarding Cumming. The Guardian and Financial Times newspapers have said that Cummings has been ordered to leave Prime Minister Johnson amid allegations that he was making statements against him and his fiancée Carrie Symonds, while the Times quoted sources as saying that Cummings had “Had decided to go early”.
Johnson’s conservatives have been embroiled in a bitter power struggle as the government struggles to contain the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic and is also attempting to secure a Brexit trade deal at the last minute.
Before his abrupt departure, Cummings reiterated comments made in January that he would make himself “largely redundant” within a year, coinciding with Britain’s definitive end to EU membership. At the time of assuming power in July 2019, Cummings was appointed by Johnson as his chief advisor.
