The first phase of the Jharkhand Assembly elections kicked off on Wednesday at 7 a.m., covering 43 constituencies across the state. By 9 a.m., the voter turnout was reported at 13.04%, as per the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Among the districts, Simdega saw the highest voter participation with 15.09%, followed closely by Lohardaga and Koderma, both recording 14.97%. The state capital, Ranchi, registered a turnout of 12.06%, while Palamu recorded 11.84%. East Singhbhum had the lowest turnout at 11.25%.

Key Political Figures Cast Their Votes
Union Minister Annapurna Devi voted in Koderma and encouraged citizens to actively participate in the “great festival of democracy.” Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who voted in Ranchi, urged voters to choose leaders who would help realize the vision behind the creation of Jharkhand. Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar also cast his vote and called on the public to vote wisely and ensure a high turnout.

What’s at Stake in the First Phase?
This initial phase will decide the political fate of 683 candidates, including 73 women. The contest is particularly intense between the BJP-led NDA and the JMM-led coalition, with several high-profile candidates in the race. Notable contenders include former Chief Minister Hemant Soren (JMM) contesting from Seraikela, and Ajoy Kumar (Congress) fighting for the Jamshedpur East seat against Purnima Das Sahu, the daughter-in-law of former CM Raghubar Das. Former CM Madhu Koda’s wife Geeta Koda (BJP) is contesting against Sona Ram Sinku (Congress) in Jaganathpur. The JMM has also fielded Mahua Maji, sitting Rajya Sabha MP, from Ranchi.
