A recent case at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) in New Delhi serves as a stark warning about the dangers of untreated sinusitis, which can escalate into life-threatening complications.
Dr. RG, a 27-year-old physician, experienced a sudden loss of vision in his right eye following months of nasal congestion. A CT scan revealed that he was suffering from nasal polyposis and fungal sinusitis, which was compressing his optic nerve within the sphenoid sinus.
Dr. Varun Rai, ENT Consultant at SGRH, emphasized the seriousness of the condition: “These surgeries are highly specialized because the optic nerve is extremely delicate, and even a small error can result in permanent blindness.”
The patient underwent emergency sinus surgery, including endoscopic optic nerve decompression. The fungal infection, which had spread to all sinuses and the area between the nerve and brain, was entirely removed. Remarkably, Dr. RG’s vision was restored within two days post-surgery.
This case highlights the severe risks associated with untreated sinusitis. Dr. Rai noted, “It underscores the rarity and potential danger of leaving sinusitis untreated, as it can lead to devastating complications.”
Although severe cases like this are less common due to better awareness and diagnostic tools, Dr. Manish Munjal, ENT Senior Consultant at SGRH, pointed out a concerning trend: “We’re seeing an increase in such cases, partly due to rising pollution levels that trigger nasal allergic responses.”
Typical sinusitis symptoms include nasal congestion and discharge. Doctors emphasize the importance of early diagnosis through endoscopic examinations and CT scans to prevent severe outcomes.
