Bangladesh’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan has announced his intention to resign. He plans to submit his resignation letter to the President after completing necessary formalities, as he revealed to the media at the Supreme Court premises this afternoon.
His decision follows a student-led protest on Saturday morning, during which the Chief Justice and Appellate Division judges were given an ultimatum to resign by 1 PM. Earlier today, students, advocates, and other protesters gathered at the Supreme Court premises, demanding the resignation of the Chief Justice and other judges by the deadline. They threatened to besiege the judges’ residences if their demands were not met.
In a related development, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif extended his congratulations to the interim government led by Prof. Yunus via a Facebook post. He also called on the government to take decisive action to curb the ongoing violence, looting, and arson across the country. The interim government assumed office following the ouster of the Awami League-led administration.
Meanwhile, services have resumed in 29 out of the 50 police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), though operations in the remaining 21 stations are yet to start. Earlier this week, newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam directed all police personnel to report to their stations within 24 hours. The following day, he appealed to the public to assist police in returning to their duties.
