Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus has returned to Bangladesh amidst political turmoil, stepping in to head a new interim government following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after weeks of intense student-led protests.
Upon his arrival at Dhaka airport, Yunus addressed the press, emphasizing the need for restoring law and order, stating, “Hatred and unruliness are the enemies of democracy.”
Yunus is expected to be sworn in as the head of a team of advisers at the official residence of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
In the wake of Hasina’s departure, her Awami League party will not be part of the interim government. The recent unrest has resulted in the deaths of approximately 300 people and left thousands injured.
