AI-powered security systems to safeguard Red Fort on Independence Day

Security forces are set to implement advanced artificial intelligence (AI) security systems with cutting-edge surveillance capabilities and automated crowd estimation at Red Fort for the upcoming Independence Day, according to sources.

A recent document reveals that AI-driven CCTVs equipped with video analytics will be installed at key locations around the venue. These intelligent surveillance systems will include features like vehicle number plate recognition, facial detection, people counting, tripwire, audio detection, intrusion alerts, defocus alerts, and the identification of abandoned or missing objects.

“We’ll also be using AI-enhanced cameras to monitor the entry and exit of individuals within the premises, with AI facilitating real-time crowd estimation,” an official added.

The cameras will also be capable of identifying abandoned baggage in public areas. Intrusion detection features will be prioritized to secure high-risk zones. Zone-specific alarms can be configured according to the priority and sensitivity of each area.

The advanced Facial Recognition System (FRS) will enable the identification of faces in live video feeds as well as recorded footage, matching them against a “Watch List” database and alerting the control room if any matches are found.

The system will detect multiple faces within group images and search for similar faces using data from single or multiple cameras. Enrolled individuals can be located by name or similar facial features, and unknown faces can be identified through a single image or group photo.

A senior government official provided further insights, noting that while facial recognition has been used in past years, this year will see the introduction of Number Plate Recognition (NPR) technology. NPR will enable the detection of vehicle plates through real-time, 24/7 video processing, capturing both video recordings and snapshots of every vehicle, especially those violating security protocols. The system will be integrated with various cameras and sensors to capture driver images.

Delhi Police plans to deploy over 700 CCTVs and more than 150 cameras equipped with video analytics capabilities. Over 10,000 security personnel, including Delhi Police and paramilitary forces, will be stationed in and around Red Fort and other strategic locations in central and north Delhi.

A team comprising central intelligence agencies and other concerned security bodies recently conducted a security review at Red Fort in preparation for the Independence Day celebrations. In light of the recent attack on former US President Donald Trump during a public event, additional measures are being considered to ensure heightened security at this high-profile event, according to reliable sources.
