In a landmark diplomatic visit, President Droupadi Murmu and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka agreed to deepen the partnership between India and Fiji. The meeting, held on Tuesday, marks a pivotal moment in the longstanding relationship between the two countries.

This visit, which is the first by an Indian President to Fiji, saw President Murmu welcomed by Fijian President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere at the State House in Suva. A traditional ceremonial reception was accorded to President Murmu, highlighting the significance of this historic occasion.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the importance of the visit, stating on X, “A landmark in India-Fiji relations! President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn arrived in Suva, marking the first visit by an Indian President to Fiji. PM @slrabuka of Fiji welcomed her at Nausori Airport with full state honors.”

During her time in Fiji, President Murmu reviewed the progress of the ‘Solarization of Heads of State Residences’ project, an initiative launched by India in February 2023, showcasing India’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

This visit is part of President Murmu’s broader three-nation tour, which includes subsequent stops in New Zealand and Timor-Leste. The tour emphasizes India’s dedication to its Act East Policy, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a decade ago, aiming to enhance diplomatic and economic ties in the Asia-Pacific region.

In New Zealand, President Murmu will meet with Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, from August 7-9. She will also address an education conference and engage with the Indian community, underscoring the cultural and educational ties between the two nations.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs noted, “These state visits highlight India’s strong focus on strengthening bilateral relations with Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste, reinforcing the importance of the Act East Policy in our diplomatic strategy.”

The tour’s final leg will bring President Murmu to Timor-Leste on August 10, where she will engage in discussions with President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Kay Rala “Xanana” Gusmao. This visit also marks the first by an Indian President to Timor-Leste, further solidifying India’s commitment to enhancing regional partnerships.
