India is set to host the first-ever BIMSTEC Business Summit in New Delhi from August 6-8, highlighting a major initiative to enhance regional cooperation in the Bay of Bengal area. This landmark event, organized by the Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), aims to foster stronger trade and investment relations among BIMSTEC member countries.
The summit will be inaugurated by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, with Union Minister of Commerce and Industries Piyush Goyal and other prominent leaders delivering keynote speeches. The gathering will feature a diverse range of participants, including ministers from BIMSTEC member states overseeing trade, commerce, industry, and energy, alongside senior government officials, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and industry associations.
According to a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs, “The first edition of the Business Summit aims to foster greater regional collaboration through robust trade and investment relations among the member countries of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).”
The event will convene over 300 key stakeholders from the region to discuss and explore key areas such as trade facilitation, regional connectivity, energy security, inclusive growth, and sustainable development.
India’s commitment to BIMSTEC, which connects five South Asian nations (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka) with two Southeast Asian countries (Myanmar and Thailand), will be underscored at this summit. This event follows the 4th Annual Meeting of BIMSTEC Security Chiefs in Naypyitaw, Myanmar, where National Security Advisor Ajit Doval led the Indian delegation.
